The core configuration

Delta’s current product page lists a 28-1/2 by 6-1/4-inch table, six-inch cutting width, two knives, 10,000 RPM, 20,000 cuts per minute and a one-eighth-inch maximum cut. It also lists a 12-amp, 120V configuration and a 76-pound weight. These figures establish the package; they do not provide measured evidence that the heavier casting produces a better surface or retains alignment after shipping or years of use.

The same page identifies a 2-1/4-inch inside and 2-3/8-inch outside chip-chute opening and includes push blocks. Its overall dimensions conflict with a different set in the manual, so use the verified table length for comparison but measure the complete offered machine before building fitted storage or a dust connection.

For a compact workshop, compare the complete installation with the fence, dust connection and board travel included. A benchtop machine can still require a substantial clear working area. Decide whether the proposed mounting surface is permanently available or whether repeated setup would become an obstacle to using the tool.

Straight knives and ownership costs

The two-knife arrangement makes replacement-blade compatibility an important shopping question. Find the correct knife set and fastening parts before buying an older example. A generic six-inch blade description is not enough to establish that dimensions and clamping details suit this cutterhead.

Do not assume a spiral upgrade is available or economical simply because another compact jointer accepts one. Compare the cost of keeping the original configuration in service with buying the cutter system you actually want. Include your time for setup and the reliability of the replacement supply in that decision.

Documented working boundaries

The Delta manual prohibits workpieces shorter than ten inches, narrower than three-quarter inch or thinner than one-half inch. It also provides operation-specific guarding and workholding instructions. Those limits must not be relaxed because a small offcut appears easy to hold or another machine publishes a smaller number.

For electrical planning, note that the manual’s specification table says 120 volts while an earlier power paragraph says 110 volts. Confirm the delivered nameplate and appropriate supply instead of treating these copied fields as permission to modify wiring. Use qualified help for any uncertainty about the installation.

What to inspect on an existing machine

For a used 37-071, request clear photographs of the model plate, cutter guard, fence mount, tables, controls and included accessories. Ask whether any parts were substituted or modifications made. An attractive asking price is less useful if a missing guard or damaged casting prevents a complete, supported restoration.

Separate cosmetic oxidation from damage that affects function. Have the machine assessed by a knowledgeable person when you cannot judge its condition. Avoid running an unfamiliar machine to investigate suspected loose cutters or electrical problems. Documentation and a complete inspection come before any demonstration with stock.

Use the parts list without assuming inventory

Delta’s official service-parts list, revised October 5, 2022, identifies the original 37-073 knife accessory along with exact guard, belt and dust-chute references. That is stronger service evidence than a generic six-inch blade title, but a part number does not prove a component remains in stock. Verify availability with Delta or an authorized parts route before valuing an incomplete used machine.

The parts list also helps prevent a common marketplace error: titles mentioning 37-070, JT160, 37-072 or 37-372 do not establish 37-071 compatibility. Match the machine and component drawing, then confirm current supply. An attractive used price should not outrank a missing guard or an unsupported cutter component.

When the Delta makes sense

The 37-071 has the most detailed service record in this three-model straight-knife comparison: its manual and parts list provide stock minimums, table and chip-chute dimensions and exact component references. CRAFTSMAN’s CMEW020 and PORTER-CABLE’s PC160JT instead add variable speed, and both now have matching official manuals; only PC160JT lacks an exact retained machine offer here. Better documentation is a purchasing advantage, not evidence that Delta wins an unperformed cutting test.

Before ordering, establish the actual seller, current stock status, warranty eligibility and return terms. An official product page does not guarantee that every marketplace seller has new inventory. Keep the model manual and parts diagram with the purchase record; they make later replacement orders and support conversations far more precise.
