Choosing a Benchtop Jointer for a Small Shop

By John Morris · Updated 2026-09-07 · Research method

A small-shop jointer should be chosen from a drawing of its working station, not just a product footprint. The important question is whether you can prepare your ordinary boards with clear access, secure mounting and suitable collection. Compact storage helps, but a tool that is difficult to set up may not earn the space you intended it to save.

Measure the working route first

Choose a representative long board from your normal work and map where it will be before, during and after the cut. Perform layout checks with equipment disconnected. Include your own standing position, controls and the route by which stock arrives at the machine.

Do not assume that the narrow gap remaining after parking a car provides enough usable room. Doors, shelves and other tools can interfere with the board path. The operating arrangement must make sense as a whole, not merely allow the machine body to squeeze into a corner.

Decide whether the machine stays installed

A dedicated station reduces repeated setup but occupies ongoing space. A stored benchtop machine releases a bench but adds handling and mounting each time. Compare both honestly against the frequency of work you expect.

If you only use the jointer occasionally, a suitable removable mounting arrangement may be practical where the manual permits it. If you use it throughout most projects, repeated lifting and clearing may become the main frustration. An appropriately installed stationary position can be the more compact workflow even if it looks larger on paper.

Budget room for dust collection

Locate the collection equipment and route its hose without obstructing controls, foot space or stock travel. Verify the model’s collection requirement rather than selecting solely by the hose that happens to fit. An adapter addresses connection size, not the entire airflow question.

Also leave access to empty and maintain collection equipment. A station that works only when a hose is sharply bent around storage boxes is a planning problem. Resolve the route before ordering the machine and a pile of fittings.

Protect adjustment and service access

You need to reach the fence adjustments, mounting points and areas identified for routine checks. Do not push a machine permanently against a wall without determining what future maintenance requires. A little planned clearance may prevent repeatedly dismantling the installation.

Store push devices, the applicable manual and checking tools where they are available without reaching over operating equipment. Separate frequently used items from spare parts. The aim is to make appropriate preparation convenient enough that it becomes the normal start of a session.

Choose width after checking the space

Once the working arrangement is plausible, compare cutter widths against your actual stock. A wider model may still be appropriate in a small shop, but only if its full use and handling fit the plan. A smaller room does not automatically demand the smallest cutter.

Conversely, a wider machine does not replace a long reference bed. If your projects involve long components that remain awkward in the proposed station, consider another milling arrangement. Storage efficiency is not a reason to force unsuitable stock through a compact installation.

Make a complete shopping list

Include the precise machine, permitted mounting arrangement, correct collection connections and any required measuring equipment. Verify lifting instructions before deciding where it will be stored. Do not plan to carry it by a fence, guard or table simply because those parts are easy to grasp.

Compare the finished station with the option of supplier-prepared stock. In a very small workshop, avoiding a rarely used machine can preserve useful assembly space. When the jointer is justified, choose the installation that remains workable after the excitement of the new purchase wears off.

Questions, answered

Can I put a benchtop jointer on a folding table?

Only a support and mounting arrangement suitable under the machine’s instructions should be used. Fit on the tabletop alone does not establish stability.

Is an eight-inch machine too large for a garage?

The answer depends on its installation and your stock path, not the garage label. Measure the full working space and storage route.

Does a small dust hose make the setup compact enough?

Hose size is only one consideration. Confirm the collection requirement and provide an unobstructed practical connection and service route.
