Why Does My Benchtop Jointer Leave Snipe?

Jointer snipe is a localized unwanted cut near a board end. It is different from a board that gradually tapers along its entire length. Begin by describing the shape and location of the defect, then check the appropriate handling and setup instructions before changing the machine.

Inspect the board off the machine with a straightedge and suitable measuring tools. Mark the affected end, face and feed orientation. A photo taken in consistent light can help explain the defect to technical support. Note whether the problem appears on every suitable board or only on a long or flexible piece. These details prevent a vague complaint about uneven cutting from triggering adjustments that have no relationship to the actual symptom.

Preserve a useful comparison piece

Set aside the affected sample if it is safe to keep for inspection. Label the date and operation rather than making another cut that erases the evidence. A sample showing a localized end defect is more useful than memory alone when you compare setup before and after a correction.
