Is a Benchtop Jointer Worth It for Your Shop?

By John Morris · Updated 2026-09-07 · Research method

A benchtop jointer is worth considering when it solves a recurring stock-preparation problem that your present tools or supplier do not handle conveniently. It can be poor value when the ordinary work exceeds its limitations or you rarely need its function. Assess the jobs it would actually perform before turning the question into a contest between favorite brands.

Identify the problem you are paying to solve

Write down the last three situations where you wanted a jointer. Were you establishing a flat face, preparing a square edge or trying to make multiple boards the same thickness? The last task points toward thicknessing rather than automatically toward a jointer purchase.

Be specific about material and dimensions. A tool that fits small cabinet components may not fit the broad or long boards that prompted the purchase. A vague desire for better woodworking is difficult to price; a recurring operation is much easier to evaluate.

Compare ownership with prepared stock

Obtain a realistic local quote for suitable surfaced lumber or milling services. Compare that with the quantity you expect to use, rather than assuming every board you buy in future will be rough. Include travel or delivery if that is a meaningful part of the outside option.

Owning a jointer also has convenience value: you may prefer to prepare stock when a project needs it. That preference is legitimate, but label it as convenience rather than presenting it as guaranteed cash savings.

Use a transparent break-even estimate

For a simple planning example, suppose a complete station costs 800 dollars and avoids 40 dollars of outside milling on each comparable project. The arithmetic is twenty projects before counting ongoing costs or the value of your time. These figures are hypothetical, not quoted machine prices or service rates.

Then test a less favorable case: if the avoided cost is only 20 dollars per project, the same purchase takes forty projects on that simplified measure. Changing one assumption can reveal whether your decision depends on unrealistically frequent use.

Count the work that still remains

The machine must be mounted, checked, connected to appropriate collection and maintained. You also need a way to complete the rest of the milling sequence. A jointer does not become a complete lumber-processing shop by itself.

Include learning and practice in your plan. Buying capacity does not remove the need to understand reference surfaces or inspect stock. If setup repeatedly takes longer than the small task you hoped to accomplish, a different arrangement or prepared lumber may serve you better.

Recognize when the category is a poor fit

If most planned boards exceed the documented cutting envelope or cannot be handled appropriately in your space, do not force the numbers to favor a benchtop purchase. Compare a different machine class or a service that can process the material.

Likewise, if your present frustration is an occasional glue-up edge, assess an appropriate alternative method before buying a separate tool for one narrow use. Alternatives need suitable workholding and instructions; they should not depend on removing guards or ignoring material limits.

A reasonable purchase decision

Buy when the recurring job is clear, the stock suits the specific machine and you can complete the installation without postponing essentials. Wait when the expected use is speculative, your supplier already solves the problem affordably or the machine category does not fit your boards.

If the financial comparison is close, convenience, interest and available space can decide it. You do not need to prove a hobby tool generates a profit, but you should know whether you are buying economic savings, personal enjoyment or a more convenient workflow.

Questions, answered

Will a benchtop jointer save money on lumber?

Possibly, but calculate from your local prices, quantities and full setup cost. Savings are not guaranteed and may be modest for occasional projects.

Is it useful if I already own a planer?

It can address reference-face and edge preparation that remains unresolved. Confirm the actual missing operation before adding another machine.

Should I buy now or wait?

Buy when you can name recurring suitable jobs and complete the installation. Waiting is reasonable if the need is hypothetical or outside milling remains simpler.
