Jointer vs Planer: Which Should You Buy First?

By John Morris · Updated 2026-09-07 · Research method

A jointer prepares a flat reference face and an edge related to that face. A thickness planer brings the opposite face parallel to a reference and to the desired thickness. These roles explain why woodworkers often use both. The first purchase should address the missing step in your own stock preparation, not a blanket rule about which machine every beginner needs.

Think in reference surfaces

Consider a board with twist or cup. The first task is to establish a trustworthy surface rather than simply reduce its thickness. The jointer’s infeed and outfeed arrangement is intended for reference preparation when the stock and operation meet its instructions.

Mark that prepared face and keep track of it through the remaining work. The point is geometry you can build from. Repeatedly removing material without identifying the reference can leave you with a thinner board while the important relationship between its surfaces remains unresolved.

What thicknessing adds

Once there is an appropriate reference face, the planer can make the other face parallel while approaching a target thickness. A jointer alone does not automatically establish that parallel relationship. Running both faces over it without a controlled plan is not the same as thicknessing.

This is why the machines are complementary even when both remove wood. The order is not a contest in surface smoothness. It is a sequence for creating the dimensions and relationships needed before joinery, assembly and final surface preparation.

Start with the lumber you purchase

If you buy stock with a usable flat face but need many pieces at matching thickness, a planer may address your immediate problem. If you already have thicknessing capability but routinely struggle to establish a flat reference and a square edge, a jointer may be the missing station.

If your supplier can prepare the lumber you need at a reasonable charge, you may not need to buy either immediately. Compare that service with the quantity of rough stock you realistically expect to mill over the next year.

Check the capacities separately

The width on a benchtop jointer and the width on a thickness planer are not interchangeable promises. Each machine has its own stock restrictions, removal limits and handling instructions. Your desired finished width must be feasible through the entire sequence.

Buying a wide planer does not automatically solve face preparation for a broad twisted board. Likewise, a wide jointer does not solve a planer bottleneck later in the process. Build a short process map before choosing capacity for one isolated tool.

Be careful with alternatives and jigs

There are alternative reference-preparation methods, including hand tools and purpose-designed fixtures, but they require a suitable procedure and workholding. A casual description of a planer sled should not be treated as complete operating instruction. Do not improvise around guards or minimum stock rules.

When comparing the purchase with an alternative, include the learning, setup and checking time that method requires. A method you can carry out accurately and consistently may be a good interim solution; a shortcut you cannot control is not a useful saving.

Choose the next missing operation

Write four headings: establish a face, square an edge, obtain parallel thickness and finish to final size. Under each, name the tool or service you will actually use. The empty or repeatedly troublesome step points toward your next purchase.

For small shops, a documented combination machine is another option, but it must be assessed in each operating mode. It is not enough for a listing to use both words in its title. Review the JET combo manuals linked here for examples of the separate jointing and planing arrangements.

Questions, answered

Can a planer replace a jointer?

It does not perform the same reference-preparation function by default. Suitable alternative fixtures or methods need their own complete procedure; simply feeding a distorted board is not an equivalent workflow.

Can I make both faces parallel with only a jointer?

A jointer does not automatically establish parallel thickness. Plan a thicknessing operation or another controlled method rather than assuming repeated passes create that relationship.

Which should a beginner buy first?

Choose the machine that fixes the missing step in the lumber you actually use. Surfaced stock, rough stock and existing tools can lead to different sensible answers.
