Start with the reason for the cut. You may need to establish a reference, remove a small defect or prepare an edge for a later operation. Those goals can require different amounts of material removal. Measure the available allowance before selecting a setting. If the board barely contains the finished part, the decision is not simply how deep to cut; it is whether the intended process can produce the part at all.
Do not copy a maximum into a routine
The RIKON 20-800H manual lists a maximum cut of 1/8 inch. That model-specific figure should not become the default for all widths, woods or benchtop machines. Keep maximum capacity separate from the choice made for a particular operation. When comparing machines, a larger maximum also does not prove faster useful production. Your result depends on control, surface quality, remaining material and the rest of the milling sequence, not just the largest setting.
Understand why consistency matters
A hand-fed operation depends on maintaining the control described in the manual throughout the pass. Rushing one section and hesitating at another can make a result harder to interpret. Wait for moving parts to stop and disconnect before inspection. Record what changed rather than immediately trying a deeper cut, different extension cord or another board. A useful diagnosis separates an unsuitable cutting demand from a stock defect, extraction blockage or machine problem. Repeated trials under a suspected fault are not productive evidence.
Compare outcomes rather than pass counts
Two boards may require different preparation because their starting geometry differs. A smaller number of passes is not automatically better if it wastes allowance or creates a defect that must later be removed. Inspect straightness, flatness and squareness as appropriate to the operation. Note whether the desired reference has been established. Once it has, move to the next planned process rather than continuing until every part has received an identical number of passes.
Make your notes transferable in the right way
Record the model, material, dimensions and observed result, not just a depth setting. This context makes the information useful when a similar project returns. Do not transfer the setting to a different jointer without checking its instructions. If another operator uses the shop, distinguish your job notes from manufacturer limits so an observation is not mistaken for a universal rule. A clear process record is more valuable than a collection of unexplained numbers taped near the machine.
