Minimum Stock Size for a Benchtop Jointer
Minimum stock dimensions are operating limits, not optional suggestions. They vary by machine and sometimes by the operation being performed. Before jointing a small piece, check length, width and thickness in the exact manual, then consider how much material the planned cuts will remove.

It is easy to confuse the width of a face with the thickness of an edge when the same board is turned for a different operation. Describe the intended cut before reading the limits. Note which surface is on the table and which surface registers against the fence. If the manual distinguishes surfacing from edge jointing, keep those requirements separate. A piece can satisfy one operation's dimensions without being suitable for the next orientation.
A documented example, not a universal rule
The RIKON 20-800H manual lists minimum stock length of 10 inches, width of 3/4 inch and thickness of 1/2 inch. Those figures belong to that model and manual. They should not be copied onto a different jointer merely because it is also sold as an eight-inch benchtop machine. Record the source beside any dimensions in your workshop notes. This makes it much harder to mistake a remembered number for a verified limit.
Plan the blank before cutting it down
Small project parts do not have to begin the milling process at their final size. Discuss an appropriate machining sequence before dividing stock into short components. Keeping enough material for the approved preparation process can avoid arriving at the jointer with a pile of unusable offcuts. Allow for the remaining operations and for material loss. The objective is a workable sequence, not finding an accessory that appears to make an undersized blank acceptable.

A piece that begins at a minimum dimension has no allowance to lose material in that dimension. Consider the finished result before starting rather than checking only the rough blank. Distortion can increase the amount that must be removed before a reference becomes usable. If the resulting piece would fall below an operating limit during the process, choose different stock or a different preparation method. Repeated light passes do not eliminate this boundary.
Push blocks do not change the limits
Guarding and approved push blocks are essential parts of the specified procedure, but they do not automatically permit smaller workpieces. Treat an aftermarket jig claim carefully: confirm that the machine manufacturer approves the arrangement and that it fits the intended operation. Do not improvise a carrier, tape a small piece to another board or remove a guard to gain access based on this guide. Those changes create a different setup that requires its own authoritative instructions.
Make the limits easy to find
Keep the current manual accessible and write a concise model-specific capacity note near the planning area, away from moving parts. Include the model, operation and manual revision rather than only three dimensions. This is especially useful if multiple machines or operators share a shop. When the manual is ambiguous, ask technical support before using the stock. The cost of a different blank is usually easier to absorb than a ruined part, damaged cutter or loss of control.

Is a ten-inch minimum standard for all jointers?
No. It is a documented figure for some models, including the RIKON example discussed here. Verify the manual for your own machine and operation.
Can a push block make a short offcut acceptable?
Do not assume so. A push block is a handling device, not permission to disregard workpiece limits. Use only a manufacturer-approved operation and setup.
Should I check rough size or finished size?
Both matter. The starting piece must qualify, and the planned cuts must not take it outside the permitted operating envelope during the process.
